Join us once again for the Virginia Environmental Assembly
(VEA)! Virginia’s premiere annual gathering of citizens,
conservation groups, elected officials, and environmental
policy experts will be held September 24 at Randolph-Macon
College in Ashland, Virginia.
Our Commonwealth is growing in population and diversity.
At the state, local and neighborhood levels, citizens
and decision-makers are involved in tough decisions
that will affect quality of life in our communities
for decades to come. Among them: How can we ensure
ample and clean drinking water? How can we preserve
the historic landmarks that define the character of
our home towns? How do we invest taxpayer dollars wisely
so that we can reduce traffic and spend more time with
our families? What options exist to help preserve a
family farm?
This year’s VEA theme, Moving Virginia Forward on
the Right Track, recognizes these struggles as part
of the bigger picture of what we want for our families
and our future. The 2005 VEA offers an in-depth look
at three areas that could move us towards real solutions
and keep citizens at the table in the process
New Leaders – The 2005 Elections and Beyond
Moving Virginia forward entails building relationships
with newly elected officials and a new administration
to preserve the resources we have and make decisions
about what, where and how we grow next. Candidates
for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General
have been invited to share their environmental platforms
at VEA. Dr. Robert Holsworth, our keynote speaker,
will address how we can raise the importance of our
air, land, water and wildlife in politics moving forward.
Attending: The Honorable Tim Kaine, the Honorable
H. Russell Potts, Jr.
Invited: The Honorable Jerry W. Kilgore, Candidates
for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General
The Virginia Conservation Network is a nonprofit,
nonpartisan organization that does not support or endorse
any political party or candidate. VEA is a nonpartisan,
educational event.
New Partners
Keeping Virginia on the right track means forging new
partnerships to help develop innovative solutions and
make our voices heard. The Virginia Conservation Network
is pleased to announce its new partnership as the Virginia
affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).
Join us to celebrate and learn from Kevin Coyle, NWF’s
Vice President of Education, about how this partnership
can benefit all of VCN’s 100+ member organizations
and other citizens. Mr. Coyle will also share his considerable
expertise on how to increase the number of people who
care about natural resources and who participate actively
in their protection.
New Opportunities
Traditionally, VEA is an opportunity to learn from
the experts on issues and opportunities affecting Virginia’s
natural resources today. This year, participants will
attend two of six workshops (held in two concurrent
sessions) that address topics of interest. In addition,
participants can explore our exhibitor tent, which
will feature groups working on dozens of local, regional
and statewide issues from across the Commonwealth.
Planned Workshops
• Building Better Communities: Transportation Investments
for Less Traffic and Growth in the Right Places
• Towards A New Power Generation: Alleviating Health
