Public Policy
VCN serves as a catalyst for sound and sustainable environmental policy. We act as researchers, advocates and watchdogs on issues ranging from cleaning the Chesapeake Bay to creating 21st century energy and transportation networks.
- VCN hosts Conservation Lobby Day, every third Monday in January. Citizens receive the talking points and training they need to lobby their legislators on top conservation priorities.
- VCN staff analyze legislation, regulations, and budget items that affect Virginia's environment, communicating findings to conservation NGOs, lawmakers, and the media.
- VCN holds twice weekly strategy meetings during the Virginia General Assembly session and sends action alerts by e-mail to concerned citizens statewide.
- VCN monitors and reports on the actions of regulatory agencies and boards throughout the year.
- VCN workgroups conduct year-round policy research in the areas of energy, forestry, land conservation, transportation and land use, and water quality.
- VCN builds coalitions among member organizations to support critical priorities like energy efficiency and land conservation.
