Richmond Audubon Society
The Richmond Audubon Society promotes the enjoyment, understanding, and preservation of birds, other wildlife and habitat through birding, education, citizen science, advocacy and fellowship. The monthly meetings, which include an optional pre-meeting dinner, are open to the public and usually attended by sixty to seventy five members and guests. The club has about 400 active members.
They are a very energetic club, with dozens of bird walks, conservation projects, and community activities. The club’s primary concern right now is reaching out to children with “nature deprivation syndrome”.

“Look at that” RAS Field Trip.
RAS Kids introduces children in underserved Richmond communities to nature, educating them through nature study and field trips that are both challenging and fun. The goal is to enable the upcoming generation to understand, respect, and value nature so they will protect it as adults.
Seventy-five percent of the event proceeds will go to Richmond Audubon Society kids and used to support:
- development of a ten-acre site at Swannsboro School to use as an outdoor classroom
- establishment of six garden plots
- set up a weather station
- trees and shrubs identification signs
- teacher training workshops
- table and benches
- photography workshops
- James River explorations
- outdoor programs
