5/14 Why Should We Restore Dyke Marsh? How Will Global Warming Affect Dyke Marsh?
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Huntley Meadows Park Visitors’ Center, 3701 Lockheed Boulevard, Alexandria, VA 22306
Almost half of Dyke Marsh, was destroyed by dredging and the dumping of construction and other debris.  Dr. Katia Engelhardt from the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science will summarize this information and explain why Dyke Marsh should be restored.

VIMS Sixth Annual Marine Science Day 10:00am - 3:00pm, VIMS Campus, Gloucester Point. Activities center around this year's theme, "Global Change," and include 10-minute "fast talks" exploring changes locally and abroad along with VIMS' polar research; hands-on learning experiences for children; the Paper Parade of Marine Life with participants wearing costumes they created from paper; music; seafood demonstrations; and tours of the VIMS' Teaching Marsh. Conservation Landscaping Workshop & Charette - Techniques for Urban Design
When:  8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where:  Wetland Studies Solutions, Gainesville
Learn about land conservation methods that protect, improve, or minimize adverse impacts to wildlife habitat and water quality.  These methods include large scale planning and design practices that protect or increase biodiversity. In addition, low-impact development (LID) techniques that reduce the effects of runoff and erosion are part of the agenda, such as biofiltration, rain gardens (or bioretention swales), permeable pavement, and green roofs.  The  workshop includes a walking tour of the Wetland Studies Solutions LID site, and a two-part Charette planning to discuss local challenges and constraints.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation – Clean the Bay Day
Clean the Bay Day involves citizens in the restoration of their local environment and fosters public awareness of the problems that are caused in the Chesapeake Bay by marine debris and other forms of pollution. CBF seeks cleanup site host organizations that will register and oversee volunteers during the cleanup, ensure that the litter collected is disposed of properly, and report the results of the cleanup to CBF.  CBF will provide promotional materials, recruiting and planning support, and recognition materials.
