Audubon Society of Northern Virginia - Organization Administrator

The Organization Administrator position at Audubon Society of Northern Virginia provides support for the programs and operations of a growing conservation organization.  The Organization Administrator works independently and with the Director of Development, Board of Directors, Program Chairs, and other volunteer leadership to effectively and efficiently develop and maintain programmatic and operational functions. 
Responsibilities:
The Administrator coordinates the daily operations and activities of a busy office to achieve maximum expense control and productivity; develops procedures and policies for office activities, such as filing, records maintenance, and faxing and mail distribution; is responsible for the maintenance of office equipment and supplies; prioritizes multiple functions and tasks.  Duties include customer service, accounting, and general office management. General administrative tasks include scheduling meetings, event coordination, preparing reports, phones, email and filing.
Qualifications:
Requires an associate’s degree or its equivalent with at least 3 years of experience.  The position does not supervise other staff, but must motivate, orient, develop and, manage volunteers to be successful.

The Nature Conservancy - Donor Relations Manager
Location:    Charlottesville, Virginia

Responsibilities:
The Donor Relations Manager will assist in the creation and implementation of strategies for the ongoing cultivation of donors and prospective donors capable of major and/or deferred gifts. A significant part of the work will involve setting and conducting exploratory visits with donors and prospective donors to steward previous gifts, solicit new or renewed annual gifts, as well as determine capacity for major gifts.  The Manager will:
  • Provide ongoing opportunities for TNC contact with past and current donors;
  • Move appropriate major gift ‘suspects’ to prospect pool for integration into the Moves
  • Management major gift cultivation process;
  • Work directly with donors and prospective donors in scheduling and managing logistics of meetings;
  • Coordinating and attending trips and events, arranging travel, and drafting routine correspondence and acknowledgments;
  • Use the fundraising management system (FMS) to update donor information, produce reports, perform analysis, and track and cultivate donors. 

General Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field and 4 years’ related work experience or equivalent combination.  Major gifts or other direct solicitation and related donor contact experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience using effective interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge or willingness and ability to learn basics of charitable gift planning.
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results. 
  • Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word and Excel.  Requires database management skills and ability to produce reports.  Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet.

Dan River Basin Association - NC Project Manager

Location: Eden, North Carolina
Program: Dan River NC Nature and Heritage Tourism Initiative

Background and Purpose
The Dan River Basin Association preserves and promotes the natural and cultural resources of the Dan River watershed With funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation, DRBA and its partners are working to draw visitors to the region, promote accessible outdoor experiences, and advance work toward a National Heritage Area designation. The end result for the Dan River region will be an improved quality of life, a healthier community, and a more attractive place in which to live and do business. The next phase of DRBA's work includes identification of natural, recreational, cultural and heritage resources along the Dan River corridor in North Carolina. This information will allow development of river guides, maps and web resources to promote boating, fishing, picnicking, and exploration of the many cultural and heritage treasures found along the river corridor.

Position Summary
The NC Nature and Heritage Tourism Project Manager will gather information from a wide variety of stakeholder groups and residents regarding the area's natural, recreational, historic and cultural resources. The Project Manager will use the results of this research to develop comprehensive print and online river guides. The Project Manager will also assist with river conservation projects, including water monitoring, riparian buffer restoration, and public education and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate work of project team, including mapping specialists and graphic designers
  • Identify and research natural, heritage and cultural resources
  • Track and report on project phases and tasks
  • Assist with budget preparation, planning, program evaluation and administrative duties

BikeWalk Virginia - Executive Director

Location: Richmond, VA
The Executive Director is responsible for advancing the mission of BikeWalk Virginia and the overall success of its programs and services. The Director works with the Board of Directors and staff to develop an annual plan for advocacy, education, and special program activities. The Director then carries out these programs working with the staff, volunteers, and partner organizations. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages day-to-day operations working with staff and volunteers
  • Prepares annual budgets and publishes monthly financial statements
  • Acts as the principal external spokesperson for BWV
  • Leads and supports the development of a network of BWV chapters in communities across the state
  • Oversees the planning and marketing of Bike Virginia and other special events

  • Plans the annual BWV statewide conference

Virginia Forest Watch - Private Forest Project Director

Location: Central or west-central Virginia with the willingness to travel, especially within Virginia

Virginia Forest Watch is a grassroots-based coalition of individuals and environmental groups organized throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia with the mission "to maintain and restore the natural ecology and biodiversity of woodlands across Virginia through education and citizen participation." It is VAFW's goal to protect forest resources by promoting sustainable forest management and responsible logging in Virginia, and by educating land owners on the value of the forest’s resources. The Private Forest Project Director will implement the second phase of the Virginia Forest Policy Reform Campaign, a joint project of Virginia Forest Watch and the Model Forest Policy Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute landowner outreach event(s) featuring sustainable forestry practice education and demonstrations; Distribute the forest landowner handbook and DVD;
  • Participate on forest-certification-conference planning team to plan and execute a statewide forest certification conference;
  • Explore, coordinate, and develop certified-products marketing-role for VAFW;
  • Educate in partnership with our policy arm, educate local governments in regard to authority in the regulation of forest practices;
  • Continue building linkages among and forge relationships with local government, Virginia Department of Forestry, and civic- conservation- and watershed-group representatives, as well as community representatives;
  • Continue exploring the creation of a forest landowner website;
  • Explore opportunities for light-on-the-land logger-training advocacy;
    plan and execute at least one field trip to Forest Service Experimental Forest(s) together with at least one follow-up stakeholder meeting to explore opportunity for a “Pioneer Forest Model” pilot project on the George Washington National Forest in coordination with the VAFW public lands program;
  • Maintain contacts data bases and communications among stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • A preferred candidate will have:
  • Consulting forestry education and experience,
  • A commitment to ecologically and economically sustainable forest management,
  • Familiarity with Virginia forests and best management practices,
  • Strong speaking and writing skills, and a willingness to work a non-traditional schedule (i.e., some weekends and evenings).
  • The candidate must be self-motivated to execute the campaign and work with little direct supervision.
  • Experience (either as a volunteer or a staffer) with a nonprofit organization and its board of directors working for social change or on environmental issues, experience in a conservation campaign, general familiarity with the workings of administrative agencies and processes, and experience with the media are preferred but not required.

Compensation:
In addition to a moderately flexible schedule and work center location, the full-time starting salary is $35,000.00 to $40,000.00 dependent upon experience. Basic benefits include health insurance, sick leave, vacation, etc.

Partnership for Smarter Growth - Campaign Coordinator

The Partnership for Smarter Growth (PSG), a project of the Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, is a grassroots effort to disseminate information, promote advocacy, and provide an educational forum to address issues of growth and development, land use patterns, and transportation issues in Central Virginia. PSG is an effort sponsored by committed individuals from the Richmond region who are concerned about the current patterns of growth occurring in the region and the repercussions that these patterns will have on the future quality of life for citizens of Richmond and the surrounding counties. PSG is a non-profit project dedicated to promoting "smart growth" development patterns within the region. The mission of the project is to improve the quality of life for citizens through the promotion of transportation and land use patterns that create a sense of place, help preserve natural resources, and enhance economic vitality.

Description of Position:
PSG will work in an 8-locality service area that includes the City of Richmond, Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, and Powhatan counties. The Campaign Coordinator will provide staff support for all projects initiated by the PSG Steering Committee and provide technical expertise and organizing support to citizen groups and government officials on land use policy, land conservation, transportation, air and water quality, historic preservation and environmental issues.

Responsiblities:

  • Community Organizing - Organize new and nurture existing citizen groups to extend reach of grassroots campaign, mobilize around neighborhood and county issues, and ensure effective community participation in land use issues. Recruit new volunteers and engage and develop capabilities of core citizen activists and volunteer leaders.
  • Policy and Technical Assistance - Utilize knowledge of or demonstrate strong motivation to learn: aspects of community land use planning, including rezonings, comprehensive plans, proffers, various transportation issues, and land conservation tools to educate and involve residents, help citizens make strategic decisions, and promote a smart growth agenda.
  • Communication - Writing clear persuasive action alerts to campaign supporters and website content and developing promotional materials to highlight PSG; directing a media campaign with traditional and new media as critical outreach tools; serve as the PSG media spokesperson as appropriate.
  • Fundraising - Aggressively pursue donor contacts, conduct foundation research, and demonstrate persuasive grant writing necessary to obtain program funding; assist in cultivating and maintaining positive donor relationships.
  • Collaboration - Work productively with PSG Steering Committee members, Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund and Sierra Club-Virginia Chapter leadership and staff, and members of the larger conservation community to maximize program goals and achieve network benefits.
  • Other - Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the VALCV-EF Executive Director/PSG Executive Committee from time to time.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong oral and written communications skills including media experience and previous grant writing and fundraising experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills including grassroots organizing
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings

Chesapeake Climate Action Network - Virginia Director

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is seeking a Virginia Director to help expand and strengthen the global warming movement in Virginia. Responsibilities:

Capitol Region Land Conservancy - Outreach Coordinator

The mission of CRLC is to promote the conservation of the capital region's historically significant land, scenic natural areas and ecologically sensitive land, water and wildlife resources. CRLC serves the City of Richmond and the Counties of Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent, and Charles City. THe Outreach Coordinator will work to implement a comprehensive community outreach and education program to promote conservation easements in Chesterfield, Powhatan and Goochland Counties and to further CRLC's mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and manage local, conservation-minded contacts to provide referrals to landowners interested in protecting their land.
  • Educate individual landowners, community groups, policymakers, and the general public about conservation easements and CRLC's mission.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation – Virginia Oyster Restoration Specialist

Location: Gloucester County

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. Established in 1967, CBF has a staff of approximately 170 employees working in offices in Annapolis and Salisbury, Maryland; Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., and in 15 field education program locations.
Responsibilities:
This position will assist the Virginia Oyster Restoration and Fisheries Scientist and have substantial responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of CBF’s Virginia Oyster Restoration Center in Gloucester County, Virginia. The VA Oyster Restoration Center has a small scale oyster farm for restoration and demonstration purposes and a remote setting facility located at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for the production of up to 3 million spat-on-shell seed oysters annually.  This position will also assist the Hampton Roads staff with maintenance and expansion of the Virginia Oyster Gardening Program.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, aquaculture, fisheries, or environmental science required; experience conducting controlled shellfish aquaculture & knowledge of regulatory aspects of aquaculture and fisheries, in particular, oysters, in the Bay desirable; experience operating and maintaining small boats (ability to obtain an OUPV or 25 ton USCG Masters License is preferred); ability to swim and be comfortable working in Bay waters are prerequisites; ability to communicate with public officials, watermen, students, CBF members, and others about CBF’s mission and Aquaculture Program; ability to learn and implement CBF policies & procedures related to field programs and safety policies; ability to collect and organize data, keep logs and records as necessary, and juggle multiple projects/ responsibilities/ schedules while remaining organized and enthusiastic; excellent oral and written communication skills required; must be proficient in MS Office and similar software. EarthCraft Virginia - Technical Manager

Qualifications:

Physical Requirements:
Performing an inspection involves extensive navigation in and around the house and attic as well as climbing ladders.  Therefore, an Inspector must possess some physical dexterity, endurance, and balance to safely and effectively accomplish this work. 
Hours of Work:
Monday through Friday 8:30AM—5:00PM generally, with flexible options. Occasional weekend or evening hours.

Friends of the Rappahannock - Marketing and Development Coordinator

Friends of the Rappahannock, a river conservation organization in Fredericksburg, Virginia, is
currently accepting applications for a Marketing and Development Coordinator. Full time, 1-
year term, potentially extendable.

Position Duties
The Marketing and Development Coordinator primarily will assist organizational leaders in
marketing river conservation programs to the public, corporate sponsors, major donors, and
members. S/he will produce marketing materials for target audiences to educate on river
conservation issues and on how to become involved in river programs through membership,
volunteering, or donating funds. The Coordinator will write proposals to seek foundation
grants, implement membership-building strategies, manage special appeals, assist with
fundraising events, and maintain fundraising and membership records. The Coordinator may
supervise volunteers in these areas. This position may assist in teaching environmental
education programs to youth. Other duties may include: guiding river interpretive trips;
presentations to local groups; assisting with field restoration and monitoring projects on land and in water; and miscellaneous program support activities.

Qualifications
o Preference for a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, philanthropy, environmental
science, natural resources or a related discipline, or experience relevant to this position
o An interest and commitment to grassroots river conservation
o Quick learner; excellent organizational skills; detail-oriented
o Excellent computer skills; strong writing skills; graphic design abilities helpful
o Good interpersonal skills; people-oriented attitude
o Ability to work well in a team
o Willingness to work occasional weekend hours
o Ability to speak in front of groups
o Driver's license ; CPR/1st Aid certification helpful

Civil War Preservation Trust - Grants Associate

The Civil War Preservation Trust is the nation's largest organization dedicated to preserving important Civil War sites. The Trust seeks an experienced professional for an immediate opening in its Real Estate Department.
Responsibilities
The Grants Associate will be responsible for expanding CWPT's use of funding available for battlefield preservation from federal, state and local government entities, as well as other non-profit organizations. The Associate will make presentations to representatives from varying levels of government and other organizations, maintain detailed records and tracking, research and recommend new grant sources, and facilitate prompt reimbursement of grant awards (totaling several million dollars per year).
Qualifications
A BA/BS is required, as well as 2-3 years of professional experience. Strong initiative, interpersonal, presentation, and computer skills (including MS Office) are also required. An interest in American history and its preservation is essential. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Piedmont Environmental Council - Field Officer/Campaign Director

Location:   Leesburg, Virginia

PEC is 30 year-old non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the Virginia Piedmont's rural economy, natural resources, history and beauty. PEC works in a nine-county service area that includes Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Greene, Loudoun, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties. The staff of PEC provides technical expertise and organizing support to citizen groups and government officials on land use policy, land conservation, transportation, air and water quality, historic preservation and environmental issues. PEC also actively works to promote voluntary land conservation in the form of conservation easements and agricultural and forestal districts. Currently, there are more than 152,000 acres of land under easement throughout the nine-county region.

Areas of Responsibility

Loudoun County Field Officer/Campaign Director is responsible for the duties outlined below:

  • Develop and execute strategies to engage citizens, organizations, and regional media in land use and conservation, transportation planning, community development, and natural resource protection. Work with officials to create open, transparent opportunities for community planning with their constituents.
  • Write strategic plans to address critical community issues, field organizing, earned media, etc, including goals and metrics. 
  • In partnership with board members and campaign leaders, raise funds for new suburban and rural initiatives in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation on the edge of the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
  • Monitor issues of importance to the Loudoun communities, both rural and suburban, through attendance of public hearings and meetings with state and local elected officials and staff and reading county documents.  Issues include:
    • Developer and Board driven proposals to change county’s zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan
    • Transportation proposals (the outer beltway, local neighborhood network, major commuting corridors, mass transit, bicycle and pedestrian routes, etc.)
    • County budget and tax rate
    • Community services (schools, recreation, fire and rescue, police, etc)
  • Monitor local press and blogosphere to keep current with community issues and concerns and the way issues are being framed and debated by reporters, bloggers, and citizens.
  • Create and implement Internet and traditional media strategy, extending campaign’s direct interaction to growing number and diversity of citizens, online and in the community.
  • Engage and develop capabilities of core citizen activists in community planning; build volunteer leaders and number of activists on multiple issues.  Create and implement strategies to engage diverse constituencies.
  • Lead and build coalition of 17 citizen groups and nonprofit organizations.  With community activists, found and nurture citizen groups around geographic and issue-based communities to extend reach of campaign. Organize coalition of groups around core message and community organizing.  Hold quarterly strategy meetings of leaders and host social gatherings.  Work with campaign leaders throughout year to mobilize their groups.
  • Write clear, persuasive email to citizens in suburban and rural Loudoun with timely turnaround.
  • Providing an overview of the land use policies and regulations for both the built and natural environment in Loudoun County
  • Monitoring local land use activities by regularly attending meetings of the Loudoun County Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors and other county and community meetings on related land use issues
  • Developing analyses of the impacts of zoning and policy changes on long term community goals
  • Providing technical assistance and information upon request to local citizens and public officials on matters relating to the comprehensive plan, zoning regulations, transportation, air and water quality, and land conservation
  • Organizing effective community participation in critical local land use issues
  • Such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the PEC President from time to time

Qualifications
Qualifications preferred: grassroots organizer with strong record of access in creating and running issue advocacy campaigns.  Candidate should have strong experience in digital and traditional media and excellent public relations, communication, and project management skills.  Expertise needed:

  • Bachelors or equivalent experience
  • Grassroots organizing
  • Internet production
  • Interactive marketing
  • Background in strategic planning
  • Must maintain good media relations
  • Must have prior experience with fundraising
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Familiarity with Loudoun County and Virginia land use issues preferred
  • Knowledge of smart growth principles and their applications at the local level preferred
  • Prior experience in land use advocacy and law, and land conservation preferred

Environmental and Energy Study Institute - Policy Director
The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable societies.
