Of every dollar appropriated in the 2000-2002 state budget, barely a
penny (less than one percent) goes to natural resources.
It's not farmland without farmers. With the economic
challenges that rural areas are facing, farmland and forestland
protection will not succeed in the long term without an accompanying
economic development approach.
We need your help to get this program adopted. It will
establish a Virginia Agricultural Vitality Task Force within the
Department of Agriculture that will put together a program to
support farmland retention AND farmers.
Virginia’s forests provide innumerable services to state citizens –
from clean water and air, to crucial wildlife habitat and biodiversity,
as well as scenic beauty and recreation. Unfortunately, these
forests are under threat from industrial logging, development, and
conversion to monoculture pine plantations.

There are several bills and budget amendments relating to the
Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, which are being considered by the
2000 General Assembly. Below is a brief summary and status of the
various provisions.
The latest figures
from the USDA indicate between 1982 and 1997, we lost 834,000 acres of
rural land in Virginia - and of that loss each year, close to 49,000
acres is farmland and 9,000 acres are forested.
